What Would a Low Density Lifestyle World Look Like?

1126065_corridor_skyOver the next few weeks, and leading into the holiday season, I want to explore a pretty big and dynamic topic.

I will be exploring the question, What Would a Low Density Lifestyle World Look Like?

What I mean by this is, What kind of a world would we live in if a majority of people, or at least a solid minority of people, were folks who lived a Low Density Lifestyle?

These would be people who were light of body and mind, who understood and embodied the concept of flow, who understood how to relax and not let stress overwhelm them, and who were passionate about what they do in life.

They would also be people who lived by the 12 step guide to living a Low Density Lifestyle, meaning they:

***Eat a healthy, whole foods oriented diet.

***Understand how to take care of their health, and are proactive in doing so.

***Are active and move, especially in ways that accentuate flow.

thinkerweb***Are flexible of body and mind, and don’t allow themselves to get caught up in rigid and dogmatic thinking.

***Are mindful of their actions and reactions, meaning they are fully aware of how they interact with others.

***Carry themselves with integrity, and maintain their authentic nature.

***Do their utmost to keep a positive attitude about life, and make

sure their emotional well-being is tended to.

***Have an abundance mindset, as opposed to a scarcity one. In other

words, they know there is enough to go around and they willingly share, as

opposed to believing that it’s every person for themselves and you have to

get yours before someone takes it from you.

***Have a great sense of humor, don’t take themselves too seriously, and

laugh easily.

***Are creative people, and are capable of using their creative intelligence

and can easily think outside the box. Where problems might bog others

down, they can come up with creative solutions.

***The work they do is something that they love and feel passionate

about it.

***Feel a strong connection to the spiritual dimension of life.

So what kind of world would it be if it was a Low Density Lifestyle world? It would be a tremendous and magnificent one!

happynewyearIt would be a world of peace; a world of a sane health care system; a world where people helped one another without thinking, what’s in it for me; a world where people lived their dream and answered to their calling; a world where people could overcome their fears and take bold action; a world where people didn’t let things impede them from finding what it is that they loved to do; and a world of forward-thinking visionaries.

In other words, it would be one amazing and mighty world.

So I invite you to take a trip with me over the next few weeks and dream along with me of what this type of world would look like.

It will be fun, it will exhilarating, and it will be inspiring: so over the next few weeks put it on your radar, and we’ll all take this ride together.

And who knows: when this series is over and we all have a good feel for what a Low Density Lifestyle world would look like, we can all then resolve to make it happen.

And happen soon.

Movement: A Key to a Healthy, Happy Life: Part 2

October 14, 2009 by Michael Wayne

ameliaYesterday and today are introductory articles to this series on Movement and Exercise – the theme of this entire series on movement is that movement is an essential key to healthy and happy living, and to living a Low Density Lifestyle.

I discussed in yesterday’s article on movement and exercise, part 1, how  movement of and by itself is important, and that the best approach was one that focused on a number of things: the body, the mind, the energy system, the breath and stillness.

I concluded the article by saying that whether you’re seeking spiritual harmony, soulful pleasures, or just want to sweat, training the body is as important as training the mind and spirit—you can’t have one without the other, and they are deeply interconnected.

Aikido - a Japanese art integrating movement and stillness

Aikido - a Japanese art integrating movement and stillness

Now, that is not to say that you have to have abs of steel to attain good health and a Low Density Lifestyle; instead what is important is an approach to movement that focuses on flexibility and strength, and touches on the components that help to make us FREE (FREE=Flow/Relax/Effortless Effort): the body, the mind, the energy system, the breath and stillness.

You may wonder why stillness is mentioned when it is movement I am talking about. Stillness gives the body a chance to rest and regenerate, and for the internal computer that runs our body and mind to reset the hardware and software within us.

Can you master the art of being still in a hurly-burly world?

Can you master the art of being still in a hurly-burly world?

You can’t just push, push, push all the time—we do too much of that. Taking the time to be still and to relax helps the body get into the effortless effort mode, and when we are in that mode we are more capable of feeling the pulse of the universe vibrating deep within our soul.

We also can’t ignore the importance of the breath, and when we practice stillness we become more cognizant of the breath and our breathing patterns. Breath is essential to all the processes that occur in the body; in Eastern traditions breath is essential because it is known that being in tune with your breath connects you to your deepest inner knowing.

The breath also signals both the beginning and end of life. If you have ever been present at the passing of a life, you would have witnessed that the final sign of transition is a deep and freeing gasp. In contrast, if you have ever had the pleasure of being witness to a new life about to begin its journey, you would have seen that the first sign of life is the cry of a newborn baby as they claim their place in the world.

Don't hold your breath! Relax and breathe deep.

Don't hold your breath! Relax and breathe deep.

Author Tarthand Tulku in his book Tibetan Meditation notes that we have both an outer and inner breath: the outer breath is our physical respiration, while the inner breath silently moves through the body and is smooth and full of feeling, and as it circulates throughout, has powerful effects on our energy centers.

If all you ever do is push, push, push all the time with your movement approach, and for that matter in your everyday doings, and never practice stillness and awareness of breath, your body will just become tighter and more rigid.

That is not the way to be if you want to live up to your peak abilities and enjoy the bounty of life. There is a certain lightness of spirit and soul that is desired in order to live a more zestful life, and so your movement philosophy should make sure that is what is represented in your approach.

Even if you can't twist yourself into a pretzel, you can enjoy yoga

Even if you can't twist yourself into a pretzel, you can enjoy yoga

That’s not to say that at times you won’t sweat and strain and feel sore all over, but you should also make the time to do something kinesthetic that has a different orientation: one that encompasses stillness, quiet and awareness of breath, so that you can feed and nourish the soul.

There also are many times when your movements are just natural extensions of life. Gardening, walking, hiking, biking, baking, playing with your friends or kids, and many other things that are part of the everyday aspects of life are all important ingredients to a healthy life because they are part of the ebb and flow of the cycles of nature and the changing seasons.

walkingThomas Jefferson understood this very thing when he once said, “walking is the best possible exercise. Habituate yourself to walk very far.”

And the Zen proverb “chop wood, carry water” is a reminder that in the daily routines of life, we can find harmony, increased awareness, stillness and flexibility of body and mind – all of which are essential to living a healthy, happy and fulfilled life that will help point you towards living a Low Density Lifestyle.

Movement: A Key to a Healthy, Happy Life: Part 1

dancemovementFor the next few weeks I will be writing about the subject of Movement. Movement comes in all shapes and sizes, but the common unifying denominator of it is that it is an essential  part of living a healthy, happy and fulfilled life.

It is also an important ingredient for living a Low Density Lifestyle. The inverse of that is that a sedentary life is not conducive to living a Low Density Lifestyle.

We are born to move. Movement is essential to life—it helps get the circulation of blood and energy in your body flowing better.

Nothing in nature stays the same, as change is the only constant of life. And we are in constant motion in the dance of life: the world is a dynamic environment of energy exchanges.

shiva-shakti

Shiva and Shakti - The Hindu Gods that represent the Dance of Life

Movement of and by itself, no matter what type, by virtue of its ability to get the heart pumping and blood flowing, can help to take lactic acid and other toxins that build up in the muscles, organs and connective tissue and assist the body in metabolizing and excreting them. This can help to dissipate the blockages and densities in the body.

But there is an art to movement. Even though we are always in motion, and always doing things, there is a certain approach to movement that can greatly enhance being in the flow state – which is the state of heightened awareness, a state where the mind is still and you are activating more of your potential.

The type of movement I am talking about can be any type of movement that touches your soul—what your passion is may be different from someone else. But the key is to do something that is aimed at the mind-body unison.

This is the type of movement that touches a dog's soul

This is the type of movement that touches a dog's soul

What would be best is if the approach focused on a number of things: the body, the mind, the energy system, the breath and stillness.

Granted, there may not be one approach you’re doing that may fit the bill and meet all these needs. But that’s ok. The trend nowadays is cross-training, to do a number of things that touch on each of the key areas that need attention.

The best philosophy in approaching what type of movement to engage in, in order to achieve a better chance of overcoming blockages and density in the body, and allowing you to attain a Low Density Lifestyle, is to practice an approach or approaches that both elongate your muscles and strengthen them. You need both—one creates flexibility and the other strength, and they go hand in hand in helping to create a dynamic flow in the body and mind.

Tai Chi - meditation in motion

Tai Chi - meditation in motion

There are many approaches that aim for this: from the East we have Tai Chi, Aikido, Kung Fu and other martial arts, along with Yoga; from the West we have Pilates, resistance work using a ball or bands, and strength training.

Then, of course, there are the various sports, which can put you profoundly in the zone when you become deeply immersed in them; and there is also dance, a modality that has its origins in the primal rhythms of the universe.

Some people mistakenly think that living a Low Density Lifestyle means having a body without muscle tone; they picture the image of a blissed-out wandering mendicant who has not a care in the world.

That is because many spiritual traditions caution followers to turn away from the body because they believe it to be a trap set by the ego to hinder transcendence.

But this is far from the truth. Whether you’re seeking spiritual harmony, soulful pleasures, or just want to sweat, training the body is as important as training the mind and spirit—you can’t have one without the other, and they are deeply interconnected.

Happiness is…Being a Free Spirit

I end this series on Happiness – and I also begin a two week summer hiatus (I’m off to do some Low Density Lifestyle living) – with the above incredible time lapse video that captures the spirit of living a Low Density Lifestyle.

Christoph Rehage walking in China

Christoph Rehage walking in China

The video is about being FREE – which stands for Flow, Relax, and Effortless Effort – and about finding happiness by being a free spirit.

Now, this is not the way you have to live in order to live a Low Density Lifestyle. It is just this person’s way. It works for him, while what works for you is your choice.

The video is about Christoph Rehage and his one-year walk on foot through China, covering 4646 km, or roughly 2900 miles. He calls it The Longest Way. But the video doesn’t give a linear progression as much as a time lapse progression of the growth of Christoph’s beard.

Once you watch it you’ll see what I mean. And hopefully it will inspire you to freespirit_graphic1begin your own journey into finding how you can live a Low Density Lifestyle.

Here are some particulars of the journey and video, taken from the Christoph Rehage’s notes:

It took place from November 9th 2007 – November 13th 2008
one year on foot – 4646km through China
unlimited beard & hair growth
thelongestway.com [my note: the website may or may not be working right now]
musical score by the kingpins (myspace.com/theoneandonlykingpins) and zhu fengbo

And here is some additional info that Christoph Rehage supplies:

- I never finished my original goal of walking to Germany. Instead, I walked for a year and roughly 4500km, passed the desert of Gobi, and then decided to stop walking for now.

china_map1- All of the distance from Beijing to Ürümqi has been completed solely on foot, straight good old walking. There are instances where you can see me in the video sitting on a plane or riding a boat, but those are during breaks I had to take from walking, either to sort out bureaucracy issues or to take care of some personal things.

- I had been planning this trip for over a year before I even started, and getting as far as I got was an experience for which I am very grateful.

- Obtaining the necessary visa for a trip like this was not very easy, hence I had to go back to Beijing a few times to resolve some issues.

- The songs I used in the video are 1) Zhu Fengbo – “Olive Tree” and 2) The Kingpins – “L’aventurier” – visit the Kingpins website if you want to know more, they are very cool I think.

- This is not a strict “1 pic a day” video, because I wanted to make it a bit more alive by adding some additional movement. Sometimes during the film you would follow me turn around, or something would happen in the background. I tried to capture these moments to make the video more interesting.

- The core of this project is in fact my website www.thelongestway.com where I have posted my extensive travel diary, starting from day 1 (Nov 9th 2007) and describing every single day until the end one year later.

One last note: if you read our Summer Hours, you’ll know that for the summer we are publishing articles one less day a week, 4 days instead of our usual 5 days.

But this time around, when we see you again with the next article on this upcoming Tuesday, this will be the last article for two weeks because we will be on summer hiatus until Tuesday Aug. 25.

Until then, enjoy!

What is Enlightenment?

Shinzen Young – What Is Enlightenment? A two-part dharma teaching from Zen teacher Shinzen Young.

Being connected to the spiritual dimension of life is an important part of living a Low Density Lifestyle. And when you start living a life that has a spiritual component to it, you start seeing and understanding that life has a deeper meaning to it.

What ultimately happens when you live a life with a spiritual connection is that you start becoming more enlightenedenlightenment is the ultimate goal of the spiritual seeker, and enlightenment is one of the positive benefits of living a Low Density Lifestyle.

And what is enlightenment? It is a life of wisdom, knowledge, insight and clarity of thought. It is about functioning at peak capability, and of feeling interconnected with all facets of the universe and of understanding on a profound level how the universe operates.

A person who is enlightened is also FREE: they are in the flow, they embody relaxation, calmness and stillness, and they act with effortless effort.

In theories of enlightenment, it is understood that humans go through an evolution of consciousness, and the more enlightened a person becomes in their lifetime, the higher up the evolutionary ladder of consciousness do they go.

According to this, these people are capable of thinking more holistically and truly understanding the integral connection between the world of science and matter and the world of spirit.

In the two-part video, Zen master Shinzen Young explains enlightenment and the steps to attaining it. After watching the two videos, you will feel more enlightened of body, heart and mind.

Stress and the Teenage Years

March 31, 2009 by Michael Wayne

Are You Stressed?

So, are you stressed? Are you able to relax and experience stress relief? Do you have time to play? Do you sleep well? These are some essential questions, because if you’re overly stressed, not able to relax, not taking the time to play, and not managing stress well, you’re also most probably not sleeping well.

And if you’re stressed and not sleeping well, you know what that means? You’re living life in the fast lane, the lane in which you’re burning your candle at both ends and the candle is just about flamed out. You know what you call this: that’s right, that’s living the High Density Lifestyle, a lifestyle that is not conducive to healthy living and health and wellness.

So where do I start when talking about stress?

Teenagers and Stress

How about this? I’ll tell you that if you’re stressed out when you’re younger, you’re setting yourself up for a High Density Lifestyle adult life. Habits that we learn when we’re younger follow us into adulthood.

And getting stressed out when you’re younger is a nasty habit that if you don’t change, will affect you adversely when you’re an adult, because you’ll have a harder time managing stress and experiencing stress relief.

Teenage Stress and Heart Disease

A recent study found that teenage stress can lead to physical problems in adulthood and put adults at risk for cardiovascular disease. Researchers found that a greater frequency of stress in teens was associated with higher levels of an inflammatory marker called C-reactive protein, or CRP. CRP has been identified as an indicator for the later development of cardiovascular disease (CVD).

When you’re a teen, there are a lot of stressors that come at you, and most teens are ill-equipped to deal with them. And just think, if you’re ill-equipped to deal with them when you’re younger, then the adverse reactions your body has to stress will follow you all the way to when you’re grown-up.

Peter Panning It

Now you can take the Peter Pan approach to growing up, and basically refuse to grow up, but, and I hate topeterpan be the one to deliver the bad news, until science develops a cure for growing up, it ain’t gonna happen.

What researchers found was that daily interpersonal stress experienced during the high school years was associated with elevated levels of inflammation, as measured by higher levels of CRP, even among normal, healthy teens.

“Our findings are consistent with the emerging body of evidence that points to the link between stress and increased inflammation, which places individuals at risk for the later development of cardiovascular disease and could have a significant impact upon long-term physical health during adulthood,” was the summary of the research.

Develop Self-Awareness

So the bottom line is, getting immersed in living a High Density Lifestyle can start in your younger years and follow you along when you become an adult.

This is no way to live, so the best bet, if you’re not a teen anymore, is to develop the self-awareness of what stress is doing to you, so that you can be better at stress management and get yourself onto a Low Density Lifestyle.

And that’s when you really start living. The good news is that healthy living will be a beneficial byproduct of this.

Where Does Creative Intelligence Come From?

March 19, 2009 by Michael Wayne

Deepak Chopra on Quantum Physics and Consciousness

Where does creative intelligence come from?  Yes, I know it comes from the mind, but it’s a different mindset to think in a creative fashion than it is when you are thinking logically.

When you use your creative intelligence, you are accessing the dreaming mind, the aspect of your mind that taps into a greater world.

quantum_mind1You are actually accessing the world of quantum physics when you use your creative intelligence, a world that tells us of a vast and unlimited universe, a world of infinite energy, infinite potential and infinite information.

This is where the source of the creativity lies.

The Zero-Point Field

Quantum physics tells us that the source of all matter is what is called the Zero-Point Field. It lies at the core of the universe and it is where matter emanates from.

When you dream and use your imagination, you are tapping into the place where consciousness, stillness, breath and wisdom originate from, the place that Eastern philosophies call Universal Mind, or Big Mind. This might sound mystical, but you have to remember that the source for most famous ideas throughout history have come to their originator in a flash, often when they were least expecting something. The inventor Nicola Tesla said, “Creative ideas come to us like a bolt of lightning.”

To access the Zero-Point Field, it is a matter of being still and calm, and feeling your center. In other words, you become light of body and mind. And you know what we call that—that’s right, that’s the Low Density Lifestyle.

When you are in that Low Density Lifestyle mode, you don’t have blockages that impede your ability to quantum1access the Zero-Point Field in order to use your creative intelligence to your utmost potential.  When you are living a High Density Lifestyle, you have too much static and densities in body and mind, blocking your ability to fully utilize your creative potential.

This is why when someone gets a creative thought, a new idea or new insight that comes to them, it comes when they fully relax and allow themselves to just be in the flow.  That sounds familiar, right?  That’s because, as I’ve said before, to get into a Low Density Lifestyle, you have to be FREE—you have to Flow, Relax, and do things with Effortless Effort.

In the above video, Deepak Chopra explains the world of quantum physics. After watching the video, you may understand these heady ideas better.

As I have been saying throughout this series on creative intelligence, we all have it.  We all have tremendous innate genius potential, it’s just waiting to be utilized.  So start right now.

In tomorrow’s last installment from this series on creative intelligene (I know, I know, all good things must come to an end) we’ll hear from Elizabeth Gilbert, best-selling author of Eat, Pray, Love on genius and the creative process.

Your Mind – The Greatest Computer of Them All

istock_flying_brain

Hello Mind

I want to introduce you to your mind, and let you know that it is the greatest and most powerful computer ever invented.  No computer will ever come close to the mind’s abilities.

One of the things a Low Density Lifestyle can do for you is cultivate your Creative Intelligence and Inner Genius. You will use more of your mind’s potential and be capable of tapping into the innate genius within.

But unfortunately, most people don’t utilize their mind’s tremendous computing power.  Why?  Because they are caught up in a High Density Lifestyle.

It is only when you are living in a Low Density Lifestyle that you can access the magnificent potential of the mind and the amazing computer that it is.  Why is this?  Because when you are FREE – in the flow, being relaxed and living in stillness, and acting with effortless effort – your mind can function more efficiently.

Research has shown that stress—which is the core component of a High Density Lifestyle—affects the mind in a negative way.  And research has shown the opposite—that you think more clearly, more focused and use more of your mind’s potential, when you are more relaxed—in other words, when you are living a Low Density Lifestyle.

computer_4So let me introduce you to your mind, and tell you some facts about it that point to why it is the greatest computer ever built.

A Guided Tour of Your Mind

The human brain is estimated to have one trillion brain cells.

We are capable of storing 280 quintillion—280,000,000,000,000,000,000—bits of memory in our brain.

The speed of our brain is estimated to range from 100 to 100,000 teraflops (a teraflop is one trillion flops, and a flop is the standard measure of computing speed). The world’s fastest computer operates at a speed of 100 billion flops.

We process 125 bits of data per second through our conscious mind. The unconscious mind processes billions of data per second. And our memory approaches a 100% retention rate. We remember potentially everything, although most of those memories lie in the unconscious.

The Sad News

And now, the sad news.  Researchers into human potential tell us that we use at most five percent of our mind’s capabilities, although it is known that the great majority of people use no more than one percent.

The Truth About Your Mind

In the next few days, I am going to tell you more about your mind and what its potential is.

The truth is that the potential of the mind is vast. But if you read the above facts about your mind, you knew that already.

The truth is that you and everyone else has genius potential.

But you will tap into the genius potential of the mind and its great computing powers only if you live a Low Density Lifestyle.
